The N.J.R.O.T.C. Program at McDowell High School received its charter and began instructing cadets in 1972. Over the past 38 years of existence, the McDowell N.J.R.O.T.C. Unit has earned a reputation of excellence, winning top honors in drill, rifle and fitness competitions throughout the southeast. The unit promotes leadership development, self-discipline, physical fitness, teamwork and community service. Cadets participate in a variety of activities such as drill competitions, air rifle, physical fitness outings, community service, military orientation trips, and social events such as the annual military ball. The unit has earned numerous unit and individual citations, awards, and trophies at area and national armed and unarmed drill, academic and athletic competitions. McDowell High School N.J.R.O.T.C. has earned the Commander Naval Education and Training Command {CNET} Distinguished High School unit award for the past 15 consecutive years.

The purpose of this program is to introduce students to the precepts of leadership, and instill the value of goals and plans for the future. It also develops a sound appreciation to the heritage and traditions of America with emphasis on the role of the sea services in our military traditions. It includes info on the organization and mission of the United States Navy, military in general, drill, ceremonies, uniform regulations, physical fitness, orienteering (Land Navigation), principles of health, first aid and survival.

  • Promote An Understanding Of The Basic Elements And Requirements for Constituted Authority In A Democratic Society.
